The early pioneers referred to a place, nearby the Deschutes River as Farewell Bend. As time passed, this place became known as Bend. Until 1824 this place was only used by Native Americans for hunting and fishing, but during winters, a fur party discovered this area. Then in 1901, Bend's first sawmill, Pilot Butte, was made here.
